The cynics said the returns were too good, too steady and Madoff’s operation always looked too slim for the tens of billions of dollars it was managing. But given Madoff’s more than four decades of experience as trader and past service as chairman of the Nasdaq stock market, the wealthy kept giving him their money.

Madoff fraud case raises questions about SEC

The stunning fraud Wall Street pillar Bernard Madoff is accused of has raised questions about whether federal regulators were lax in failing to scrutinize his operations and respond to alarms raised about them.

Securities and Exchange Commission enforcement attorneys were in federal court on Friday to seek emergency relief for investors, including an asset freeze and the appointment of a receiver for Madoff’s firm, in an alleged $50 billion fraud that could be the largest ever pinned on an individual.

A government-run auto industry?

The proposed $15 billion rescue plan that drew lawmakers back to Capitol Hill this week gives Washington a strong hand in shaping the future of the US auto industry.

In sharp contrast to the relatively lax terms of the recent $700 billion bailout for the financial services industry, the auto rescue plan sets up a level of government oversight and control not seen since World War II.

Fiat’s Extreme Makeover

Four years ago, Fiat was a laughingstock. Whenever you opened a newspaper in Italy, there was another embarrassing story: Fiat had lost more money; its new car had flopped; a strike was on somewhere. Even more worrying to me was the fact that the company had gone through four CEOs in three years. Imagine showing up in June 2004 and being the fifth guy to try to resuscitate what appeared to most people to be a cadaver.

M.E.R.M. Flea Market on Wheels

So you fancy yourself a merchant, yes? How hardcore be you? Delve with me into the wicked world of the flea market, the ice cream truck, and the munch wagon. All three of these certainly have bearing when this vehicle is rode: MERM (Modular Electronic Retail Minivan.) Explore the trade and sale underground. And realize the future as it is brought back above.

What designer Eric Zhang has made here is another vehicle amongst the likes of Marty’s Munch Wagon, Mr Softee’s Ice Cream Truck, and Old Man Smith’s Pickupfull of Vinyl Records and Tools. It’s a modern traveling saleswagon! Keep your pants on though, because since there’s so much (strange) precedent, this “MERM” will have to make a brand new case for wanting to take my record collection across the country.
